Surgeries

Veterinary surgery is the branch of veterinary medicine that uses operative techniques to diagnose, treat, or manage injuries, diseases, and congenital conditions in animals. It encompasses a wide range of procedures — from routine, minimally invasive operations to complex, specialized surgeries — and is performed by veterinarians trained in surgical principles, often supported by veterinary technicians, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff.

Types of veterinary surgery

  • Soft tissue surgery: Procedures on organs and tissues other than bone. Examples: spay/neuter (ovariohysterectomy/castration), mass removals, gastrointestinal surgery (foreign body removal, intestinal repair), bladder surgery (urolith removal), wound repair, and thoracic or abdominal operations.

  • Orthopedic surgery: Procedures involving bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Examples: fracture repair, cranial cruciate ligament repair (including TPLO — tibial plateau leveling osteotomy), patellar luxation correction, and joint stabilization.

  • Neurologic/neurosurgery: Operations on the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves for conditions like intervertebral disc disease, spinal fractures, or tumors.

  • Reconstructive and plastic surgery: Restoring form and function after trauma, tumor removal, or congenital defects.

  • Minimally invasive surgery: Techniques like laparoscopy and arthroscopy that use small incisions and camera guidance to reduce pain, infection risk, and recovery time.

  • Emergency and critical care surgery: Immediate operative interventions for traumatic injuries, severe bleeding, or life-threatening conditions.

Preoperative evaluation and preparation

  • Medical history and physical exam: Assess overall health, identify comorbidities, and evaluate anesthetic risk.

  • Diagnostic testing: Bloodwork (CBC, chemistry), urinalysis, imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI) as indicated to plan the procedure and identify hidden problems.

  • Anesthetic risk stratification: Determining fasting needs, fluid therapy, and any special monitoring requirements.

  • Client communication and consent: Discuss diagnosis, surgical options, risks, expected outcomes, potential complications, costs, and postoperative care.

Anesthesia and intraoperative monitoring

  • General anesthesia is commonly used for most surgeries; local or regional blocks may supplement or replace general anesthesia in some cases.

  • Monitoring standards: Heart rate and rhythm (ECG), blood pressure, oxygen saturation (pulse oximetry), end-tidal CO2, body temperature, and ventilation are routinely monitored to maintain stable physiologic status.

  • Pain management: Multimodal analgesia (opioids, NSAIDs where appropriate, local anesthetics, and adjunctive drugs) is provided before, during, and after surgery to minimize pain and improve recovery.

  • Aseptic technique: Sterile instruments, gowns, gloves, surgical prep, and an aseptic environment reduce infection risk.

Postoperative care and recovery

  • Immediate recovery: Animals are monitored until they regain consciousness and maintain adequate respiration, circulation, and temperature.

  • Pain control and supportive care: Continued analgesics, antiemetics, fluid therapy, nutritional support, and wound care as needed.

  • Activity restriction: Bandaging, e-collars, crate rest, or controlled leash activity to protect surgical repairs.

  • Follow-up: Suture removal, rechecks, radiographs (for orthopedic cases), physical therapy or rehabilitation referrals when indicated.

  • Complication monitoring: Watch for signs of infection, swelling, dehiscence (wound opening), lameness, or systemic changes such as appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy.

Risks and complications

  • General risks: Anesthetic complications, bleeding, infection, delayed healing, reaction to medications, and anesthesia-related cardiac or respiratory events.

  • Procedure-specific risks: Implant failure in orthopedic repairs, recurrence of disease (e.g., tumor regrowth), nerve injury, or chronic pain.

  • Mitigation: Thorough preoperative assessment, experienced surgical and anesthesia teams, proper aseptic technique, and tailored postoperative care reduce risks
